DeSantis Bans School Mask Mandates, Now the Backlash Has Begun
The question of whether Florida public school students will be required to wear masks seems to have been settled by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Last week, he signed an executive order prohibiting school districts from mandating masks, a move cheered by many parents.Now the backlash has begun, from educators, doctors, and other parents, especially those whose kids have conditions that make them more susceptible to the coronavirus.

Florida’s education commissioner told the leaders of three school districts this week that he’s investigating them for “non-compliance” after they defied state rules by refusing to let parents opt out of mask requirements for their children.

The Broward County School Board has company.
The board might feel empowered to defy Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on mask mandates after the Alachua County School Board did so Tuesday night. Miami-Dade County Public Schools says it will decide the issue based on science and evidence. So Broward’s school board will have an emergency meeting next Tuesday to decide whether or not to pick a fight with DeSantis and risk losing state funding in the process.
